Numerous Sublinear Sets of Holes in Sediment on the Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge Point to Knowledge Gaps in Understanding Mid-Ocean Ridge Ecosystems

چکیده

On 13 July 2004, during an expedition exploring biodiversity along the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge, ROV dive recorded videos of numerous sublinear sets holes in sediment at ca. 2,082 m depth. The location was north Azores. Each set appeared track-like. Lengths individual series ranged from < 1 to many meters. straight or gently curved. Some intersected crossed. Close examination showed them be elongate, with long axis parallel series. were 6 × 1.5 cm, distance between similar hole length. that most recently formed each surrounded by raised sediment. Holes older partly filled and surrounding less obvious. Overall, these lebensspuren created small-scale heterogeneity local soft-bottom benthic ecosystem. source how they constructed is unknown, but may indicate excavation infaunal organism digging removal e.g., a feeding appendage large epifaunal animal. None our closeups any sign living organisms inhabiting holes. Whether connected beneath surface not visible. traces observed are reminiscent ichnofossils reported deep marine facies. We hope future studies we report here will resolve mystery what them.

A hydrous melting and fractionation model for mid-ocean ridge basalts: Application to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Azores

[1] The major element, trace element, and isotopic composition of mid-ocean ridge basalt glasses affected by the Azores hotspot are strongly correlated with H2O content of the glass. Distinguishing the relative importance of source chemistry and potential temperature in ridge-hotspot interaction therefore requires a comprehensive model that accounts for the effect of H2O in the source on meltin...

Bacterial diversity in hydrothermal sediment and epsilonproteobacterial dominance in experimental microcolonizers at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

We report here a molecular survey based on 16S rRNA genes of the bacterial diversity found in two deep-sea vent niches at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: hydrothermal sediment (Rainbow site), and microcolonizers made of three different substrates (organic-rich, iron-rich and pumice) that were exposed for 15 days to a vent emission. Bacterial diversity in sediment samples was scattered through many bact...

A novel microbial habitat in the mid-ocean ridge subseafloor.

The subseafloor at the mid-ocean ridge is predicted to be an excellent microbial habitat, because there is abundant space, fluid flow, and geochemical energy in the porous, hydrothermally influenced oceanic crust. These characteristics also make it a good analog for potential subsurface extraterrestrial habitats. Subseafloor environments created by the mixing of hot hydrothermal fluids and seaw...

Autochthonous eukaryotic diversity in hydrothermal sediment and experimental microcolonizers at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

The diversity and mode of life of microbial eukaryotes in hydrothermal systems is very poorly known. We carried out a molecular survey based on 18S ribosomal RNA genes of eukaryotes present in different hydrothermal niches at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. These included metal-rich and rare-earth-element-rich hydrothermal sediments of the Rainbow site, fluid-seawater mixing regions, and colonization d...
